Why is Modern Architecture So Boring?

A lot of people ask this question every day: “Why is modern architecture so boring?” The answer to this question is that there are very few truly original architects currently practicing today. While there is definitely a great talent which exists within the architectural industry, most of what is being offered is copycatting of the mass-produced building products. These products lack the finesse which is needed to bring contemporary architecture into it’s rightful place in our society.

It is extremely difficult to distinguish between a contemporary home design and a modern house. When you go shopping for your new home, you see them both on the television and in the stores. However, when it comes to the construction itself, modern homes are much superior to contemporary home designs. How is this so? The problem with contemporary home design is that it lacks the originality and “character” which only truly original architecture can bring. Most modern homes are built from cookie-cutter templates which are mass-produced to meet the demands of consumers.

Modern home designs are not visually stimulating and they do not give the viewer a sense of “place”. Contemporary home products have a “homey” appearance about them which makes them easier to feel at home than many other products. The lack of individuality is one of the main characteristics of contemporary home architecture. Architects do not build houses from the “standards”, but rather from their own unique personality and individualistic vision.

This leads contemporary home design to be lacking in natural features and too “flat”. The architecture of such homes is more often than not cube or L shape. These are the basic characteristics of most contemporary home designs. People who live in these environments are accustomed to this flat format and have grown accustomed to it. These individuals are not looking for a home with high ceilings, but the typical contemporary home has a lack of natural light and little to no natural climbing or riding space.

In the field of architecture there is an ongoing debate about whether or not contemporary home design is “in” or not. Some architects and some home buyers alike disagree with the idea that contemporary home design lacks character. As a matter of fact there are some very unique features found in contemporary home designs. These features have been further amplified by contemporary home designers who are trying to add a unique “personality” to their architecture. While contemporary home architecture may not be “boring” for some, it may indeed be one of the most visually striking forms of architecture currently being used today.

A great example of a very unique contemporary home design is the house on wheels concept that architect Peter Eisenman has developed. The design concept came about after the creation of a “floating village” project in the city of Wijre in Netherlands. There were a group of architects and engineers who worked together to create this very unique concept. What they came up with was a home that actually floats on water and can be used as a complete home or can be folded up and stored when not in use.

These floating villages are made up of individual “houses” that can be moved virtually anywhere using nothing more than a crane and a small boat. These houses can be designed and built by individual contemporary home architects as well as contemporary home builders. This concept is becoming increasingly popular around the world thanks to the ingenuity of some highly creative architects. These floating villages can be assembled by crane into a dynamic home any time of the day or night. Not only is this unique concept a unique piece of architecture, it is also extremely useful as a temporary living space.

This is just one of many interesting concepts that contemporary architects working in the field of architecture are coming up with. These floating villages offer a unique way for an individual to live in their own unique way. The use of the concept of “floating villages” is not only limited to the design field. In fact there are entire cities that have been built using this exact concept. These floating cities are completely self-contained and are perfect for anyone looking to buy into a concept of a modern home without sacrificing comfort and quality of life.
